Anthropic Explores Collaboration with Samsung on Innovative Custom Chip Development

In April, it was reported that Anthropic was considering creating its own AI chips to address ongoing chip shortages. Recent developments indicate that the company is now taking this idea more seriously.

On Thursday, it was revealed that Anthropic is in discussions with Samsung to potentially collaborate on the development of these chips. However, specifics regarding the intended use, integration into servers, and performance metrics of the chips remain undecided.

When contacted for insights, Anthropic shared with TechCrunch that a varied hardware ecosystem that includes components from Google, Amazon, and Nvidia will remain crucial to their computational strategy. Regarding the prospective partnership with Samsung, Anthropic did not provide additional comments.

Several companies in the AI sector are pursuing the creation of custom chips to not only meet specific computational requirements but also to reduce reliance on Nvidia, the current frontrunner in the chip market.

Anthropic’s move comes shortly after a similar announcement by its rival OpenAI, which collaborated with Broadcom to unveil a custom inference processor named “Jalapeño.” OpenAI claims that this chip outperforms others in terms of efficiency and performance-per-watt. Additionally, both Amazon and Google offer custom TPUs as part of their cloud services.

Samsung is already a significant player in the AI realm, partnering with Nvidia to supply chips necessary for training and operating AI models. In this partnership, Samsung utilizes Nvidia’s software for chip production. They are also jointly establishing an AI chip factory in South Korea and have indicated discussions for collaboration with Google in chip manufacturing.
