AI-Enhanced Hinge Design for Apple’s Innovative Foldable Smartphone

Apple’s highly anticipated foldable smartphone, the Duo, introduces several exciting features, including a key hinge developed with the assistance of artificial intelligence and 3D printing technology.
This new device marks Apple’s first foray into the foldable smartphone market, which has generated considerable consumer interest. However, the new form factor often fails to meet expectations due to durability issues commonly associated with foldable devices. Unlike traditional smartphones, these devices typically experience greater wear and tear.
Apple asserts that the Duo has been designed with innovative protective measures to combat the usual degradation associated with foldable phones. The hinge is a crucial element in this design, as explained by Johny Srouji, the company’s chief hardware officer.
“In our manufacturing process, we utilize AI algorithms to match each hinge with its optimal housing for perfect alignment. Additionally, a confocal laser methodically scans the surface of each unit, allowing us to 3D print up to 25 micro layers of a unique photopolymer to eliminate any waviness,” Srouji detailed during Apple’s recent product event.
He also mentioned that the Duo features a specialized nano-texture finish that minimizes glare and reflections, complemented by a multi-layer laminating technique aimed at enhancing the device’s overall durability. The effectiveness of these innovations in maintaining the Duo’s condition over time remains to be seen.
