a16z Launches $1.1 Billion ‘Machine Age’ Fund to Propel AI’s Physical Infrastructure Development

Andreessen Horowitz has introduced a new fund named “Machine Age,” raising $1.1 billion. The fund’s objective is to significantly enhance the physical infrastructure needed for artificial intelligence.
This fund will prioritize hardware investments, diverging from the firm’s usual focus on software development. According to a statement on the venture capital firm’s platform, the fund aims to support the essential infrastructure that enables AI, covering a broad range of components like microchips, memory systems, data centers, and robotics.
“There is a pressing need for quicker, more efficient systems. We require cost-effective, high-bandwidth memory throughout the entire architecture. Improved and expansive interconnects between various nodes and systems are necessary. Efficient power usage for edge devices is vital for AI’s ability to engage with and understand its environment. Additionally, infrastructure for cooling, materials, electrical systems, and physical space is crucial to support these advancements,” states the announcement.
The firm characterizes AI as “the most powerful tool ever created for addressing challenges and generating prosperity,” emphasizing that its progress is essential for both society and the nation.
