Meta Introduces Video Chat Feature with Muse AI Avatars for US Users

Meta has rolled out its Muse Voice feature, allowing U.S. users to make calls and engage in video chats with its AI agent, Muse, as announced on Thursday.

Initially unveiled at the Meta Connect developer conference in September, this new video chatting capability leverages AI advancements including the Muse Realtime Avatar and Muse Realtime Voice technologies, which empower the digital avatar to interact with users.

Unlike competing AI solutions that feature voice chat, Meta’s Muse presents users with an endearing, animated character known as Jolly. This avatar can be interacted with by users who ask questions or assign tasks. Additionally, users have the option to customize the avatar’s appearance to resemble a human, animal, or any other character of their choice.

Meta aims to foster a deeper connection between users and their AI agent through this anthropomorphic design, enhancing interactions as users engage in real-time discussions.

During conversations, the Muse avatar will utilize “subtle expressions and gestures” that reflect the tone of the dialogue, according to Meta.

The news of this feature’s availability was shared through a blog post and a social media update by Meta’s chief AI officer, Alexandr Wang, who provided a demonstration showcasing his Muse in action. The demonstration featured a lighthearted exchange, where he mentioned his fondness for sharing memes online, leading his Muse—depicted as a fluffy white dog—to humorously suggest he add disclaimers to avoid misunderstandings about Meta’s position on content.

This enhancement of video chat functionality coincides with Meta’s anticipation of launching a Tamagotchi-styled wearable device for the Muse AI agent by the end of the year. The device will feature a small screen where the digital avatar can appear, enabling direct communication and task performance.

Real-time interactions are now accessible on mobile devices, web browsers, and Macs, with plans to expand availability to AI glasses and the new “Muse Charm” hardware in the future.
