Decoding the Orange Dot: What It Signifies on Your Samsung Galaxy Watch

For those venturing into the world of smartwatches for the first time or switching from a different brand, such as the Apple Watch Ultra 4 to the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, Samsung’s wearables present a variety of distinctive features. One notable aspect is the small orange dot located on the left side of the watch screen. For newcomers, this might seem odd but it has a straightforward explanation.
Across the Galaxy Watch lineup, this orange dot has consistently made an appearance, including on recent models such as the Galaxy Watch 8 and Galaxy Watch 9, as well as the Ultra 2. This simple dot serves as a minimalist method for the watch to convey crucial information.
The significance of the orange dot on the Samsung Galaxy Watch
The orange dot present on Galaxy Watches acts as a notification indicator for unread messages. It will remain visible on the watch face until all notifications have been acknowledged. In cases where the dot turns red, it indicates an urgent message that requires immediate attention.
While the orange dot is typically non-intrusive, users have the option to disable it if desired. To do so, navigate to Settings > Notifications > Advanced Settings and turn off New notification indicator on watch face. This can also be managed via a linked Samsung phone through the Wearable app under Watch Settings > Notifications > Advanced notification settings.
Additional symbols found on the Galaxy Watch
The orange dot is not the only symbol on Galaxy Watches. These devices utilize various icons to communicate different statuses on their compact screens. In addition to the orange or red dot, the watch may display other symbols, such as a phone icon with a slash, indicating a lost Bluetooth connection, or a cloud symbol showing that it is linked to mobile data or Wi-Fi.
Additionally, a padlock icon appears when the watch is locked, requiring a password to unlock. At the bottom of the screen, a blue music note indicates that a music app is active, and tapping it allows for control over playback. Alternatively, a green phone icon may show up when either the watch or a connected phone is engaged in a call.
