4 Gripping Paramount+ Thrillers to Dive Into This Week (October 12-18)

As autumn settles in with its cooler temperatures, falling leaves, and eerie evenings, many find themselves yearning for cozy nights indoors with thrilling films. Fortunately, Paramount+ offers a rich selection of edge-of-your-seat options, perfect for movie nights this week.

One film that has dominated the Paramount+ charts this month is One Mile, featuring Ryan Phillippe. However, as Halloween approaches, a new contender has emerged, taking the top spot in my recommendations for this week. Along with this standout, I’ve also chosen two critically acclaimed films exploring dark themes: one about three desperate men who stumble upon a bag of cash in the wilderness, and another involving a deadly insurance scheme linked to a hitman.

One Mile

An unforgettable college tour, split into two parts

This action-thriller, directed by the mind behind Netflix’s successful I Will Find You, has claimed the top spot on the Paramount+ charts for several weeks. If you enjoy intense films like Liam Neeson’s Taken or Bob Odenkirk’s Nobody, where a regular man taps into hidden skills to protect his loved ones, then One Mile: Chapter One and Chapter Two will not disappoint.

In this gripping narrative, former Special Forces operative Danny Beckett (Ryan Phillippe) aims to bond with his teenage daughter, Alex (Amélie Hoeferle), by taking her on a college road trip. Their journey takes a dangerous turn when they inadvertently camp near a secluded community led by Stanley Dixon (C. Thomas Howell), who seizes Alex, prompting Danny to unleash his combat skills in a desperate bid to rescue her. In Chapter Two, the story escalates as Alex is kidnapped once more, leading Danny to retaliate.

Killer Joe

Matthew McConaughey breaks the mold

If you’re familiar with Matthew McConaughey’s transition from romantic comedies to darker roles, you’ll recognize Killer Joe as one of the pivotal films from that shift. This 2011 thriller showcases him in a role that is both chilling and emblematic of his career reinvention.

The film follows Chris Smith (Emile Hirsch), a Dallas drug dealer whose mother absconds with his cocaine stash, putting his life at risk. In desperation, he and his stepfather, Ansel (Thomas Haden Church), hire hitman Joe Cooper (McConaughey) to eliminate her and claim the insurance money. However, when Chris struggles to provide Joe’s upfront payment, he unexpectedly offers his sister Dottie (Juno Temple) as collateral, leading to a series of chaotic events.

2
A Simple Plan

Finding a bag of cash rarely ends well

Cinematic experiences like No Country for Old Men and A Simple Plan remind us that finding bags of cash typically leads to disastrous consequences. Directed by Sam Raimi in 1998, this film earned Billy Bob Thornton an Oscar nomination and maintains a solid rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The plot involves small-town accountant Hank Mitchell (Bill Paxton) and his brother Jacob (Thornton), alongside their friend Lou (Brent Briscoe), who discover a crashed plane buried in the snow and stumble upon a staggering $4 million in cash. Planning to keep it hidden until spring, their greed spirals out of control, resulting in suspicion, treachery, and ultimately – tragedy.

1
Dracula

Luc Besson’s unique take on a classic

This week’s top recommendation also leads the Paramount+ charts just in time for the spooky season. Renowned filmmaker Luc Besson, known for works like La Femme Nikita and The Fifth Element, offers his rendition of Bram Stoker’s horror classic with his 2025 film Dracula, starring Caleb Landry Jones as the iconic vampire.

Besson blends romance and horror, drawing inspiration from Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 adaptation. His story centers around Prince Vlad (Jones), who forsakes God after the death of his wife, Elisabeta (Zoë Bleu). He embarks on a centuries-long quest to find her reincarnation, now embodied in Mina (also played by Bleu), all set against a whimsical backdrop of late 19th-century Paris, as he uses perfume instead of traditional hypnotism to woo his victims. The film also features Christoph Waltz in the role of a vampire-hunting priest.

October’s tension and thrills intensify

No matter which of these thrilling films you choose for your next movie night, prepare for an evening filled with suspense and questionable decisions (the characters’, not yours) as we edge closer to Halloween. If you’re looking for a lighter fare or some comedy to balance the tension, numerous other options are available to explore.
