Bose Acquires Competitor Skullcandy in Strategic Move

Bose aims to enhance its market reach through this acquisition.

Bose has officially acquired Skullcandy, integrating the headphone and speaker brand as a distinct entity within its consumer audio division. While the financial details of the deal were not disclosed in the announcement, a history of collaboration between the two companies has existed, with products like the Skullcandy Crusher 1080 headphones featuring “Sound by Bose.”

Despite the acquisition, Skullcandy will maintain its headquarters in Park City, Utah, where it was established. This acquisition will provide Skullcandy with enhanced access to Bose’s cutting-edge technology and resources, promoting its continued growth and innovation. For Bose, the key motivation behind the acquisition lies in Skullcandy’s diverse audience, which spans across sports, gaming, music, and fitness—areas where Bose seeks to strengthen its consumer engagement.

“For over 60 years, Bose has dedicated itself to delivering outstanding audio experiences wherever people choose to listen. In our effort to connect with an even broader audience, we’re broadening our approach, not only through Bose products but also through strategic partnerships and an expanding range of brands,” stated Bose CEO Lila Snyder.

While Bose is renowned for its high-quality audio, specifically in active noise cancellation, it lacks a trendy image. In this respect, Skullcandy could serve as the more youthful and fashionable counterpart to Bose, similar to how Beats positioned itself alongside Apple, thus allowing Bose to appeal to a younger and more diverse customer base while benefiting from the technological advancements of Bose’s premium products.
