Smart Reveals Innovative Ultra-Compact Electric Vehicle at Paris Motor Show

Smart recently introduced its new ultra-compact electric vehicle, the Smart #2, at the Paris Motor Show. This release comes four years after the company launched the Smart #1 and signifies a return to the brand’s compact roots following a series of SUV models. The Smart #2 is designed to be tiny, resembling the well-known Smart Fortwo.

This vehicle accommodates two passengers and is engineered for easy navigation through tight urban streets and hassle-free parking in confined spaces. It will feature a range of two-tone color choices, reminiscent of the original Fortwo.

Equipped with a rear-mounted 60kW electric motor, the Smart #2 generates 130Nm of torque directed to the rear wheels. Notably, the rear tires are larger than the front, contributing to improved stability.

The vehicle’s floor-mounted battery allows for a range of up to 180 miles (290 kilometers) per charge—an impressive figure for such a compact car. Furthermore, it supports fast-charging capabilities, enabling the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes. Smart claims that the car is designed for “sportier handling and increased comfort,” thanks to its advanced five-link rear suspension.

While the Smart #2 may echo the classic Fortwo in appearance, it is equipped with cutting-edge features. This includes driver assistance technologies, a 10.1-inch central display, and an 8.8-inch driver monitor. The vehicle offers wireless connectivity through 4G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

Several trims will be available for consumers. The base model, Pure, includes the aforementioned features. The next level up, Pure+, adds an 11kW AC charger and a heated driver’s seat. The Premium trim introduces additional luxuries such as a glass roof, heated leather seats, and a seven-speaker Sennheiser audio system, along with more color options. Lastly, the limited-run Couture Edition will offer a striking white exterior complemented by a gold-painted roof and tires with gold accents, with only 999 units available.

While exact pricing and availability have yet to be confirmed, Smart indicates that the starting price will be under $26,500 (£20,000), with preorders set to begin in Spring and deliveries anticipated for Summer.

Unfortunately, this model may not be available in the U.S., as Smart has not sold vehicles in America since 2019, and there appears to be a lack of interest in smaller, budget-friendly electric cars in the market.
