Flock Safety Faces Potential Large-Scale Layoffs Amid Growing Discontent

Employee morale at a controversial American company seems to have plummeted significantly.

Flock Safety, known for supplying AI-driven license plate recognition systems to law enforcement, is reportedly set to reduce its workforce by 18 percent. The company has garnered significant backlash from a wide array of Americans, and its surveillance cameras have become a point of contention nationwide. The mounting criticism may now be impacting the company’s operations.

The anticipated layoffs, affecting around 270 employees, are scheduled to take place at the end of October based on insider information. Recently, Flock initiated an employee buyout program that includes attractive severance packages, amidst growing dissatisfaction among staff concerning external pressures. It remains unclear how many employees will exit voluntarily through this program. Currently, Flock employs approximately 1,500 individuals.

The opposition against Flock has gained traction across political lines. Despite the firm promoting a strict law-and-order agenda, it has faced bans in Florida, with Governor Ron DeSantis criticizing its potential to transform the state into a surveillance hub. In Texas, the company lost access to state funding as Governor Greg Abbott appeals to his voter base ahead of the midterms. Pennsylvania’s incumbent Democrat, Josh Shapiro, has also denounced Flock’s cameras, expressing interest in legislative measures to restrict their use. The Los Angeles Police Department in California has opted not to renew its contract with Flock. Additionally, public figures from both ends of the political spectrum have condemned the company, while citizens have taken to social media, sharing videos of themselves dismantling or stealing Flock cameras, often receiving support from online users.
