IDC Reports a 20% Decline in Global PC Shipments for Q3 Compared to Previous Year

Greetings, RAMaggedon, my familiar adversary.

The International Data Corporation has disclosed that global PC shipments reached 62.7 million units in the third quarter of 2026. This reflects a 9.1 percent decline from the previous quarter and a substantial 20.1 percent drop when compared to the same quarter in 2025.

Contributing factors to this decline include “supply issues” and “high prices,” leading to diminished consumer interest. Notably, the IDC recorded its first shipment decline in nine quarters back in July 2026, shortly after revising its 2026 outlook for the PC market.

Jitesh Ubrani, IDC’s research director for consumer devices, highlighted concerns among retailers about holding excessive stock in a market where elevated prices are dampening demand. “This situation may prompt promotions that could offer some temporary relief for consumers, yet we do not anticipate prices approaching last year’s levels any time soon. As macroeconomic conditions worsen, the outlook may actually deteriorate further in the upcoming quarters,” he noted in the announcement.

For those considering purchasing computers or components, it is advisable to take advantage of any deals available. Alternatively, according to IDC, waiting for at least another year may be wiser, as prices are expected to stabilize eventually.
