After a Week with Pixel’s New Battery Summaries: Google Needs to Step Up

When I heard that Google was introducing AI-powered battery summaries for Pixel devices, I must admit I was skeptical. Although I’ve appreciated the recent updates from Gemini Intelligence on my Pixel 11 Pro XL, some features feel unnecessary. Nevertheless, battery performance is a crucial aspect for many users, and any innovative methods for understanding battery usage could offer valuable insights.

After monitoring my battery consumption over a week through Google’s new summary tool, I found some predictable results. Though it’s easy to dismiss these battery summaries as just another superfluous feature, there are some positives. With a few adjustments, these summaries could significantly enhance how we manage battery life.

Does knowing more about battery drain alter your usage habits?

Common culprits behind battery drain

To access the battery summary, just go to Settings, then Battery and charging. Clicking on Battery usage will show the summary at the top. It takes about a second to load while it analyzes battery use during that time.

I didn’t need any AI summary to know that apps like TikTok and X suck up my battery. While I appreciate Google’s straightforward language in explaining this instead of cryptic percentages, it doesn’t alter my usage habits. Everyone is aware that some apps demand more power, but if you enjoy using them, you will likely accept the trade-off.

Even though I don’t expect AI summaries to change how I use my device, I do find it useful to know if I’ve been especially active with my phone that day. If I have a busy day ahead with limited chances to recharge, it’s advantageous to know if I need to reduce my scrolling. The AI battery summaries can indicate whether my usage patterns are typical or if I’ve drained more power than normal.

What excites me most about these new battery summaries is not their current capabilities but their future potential.

Enhancing the battery summary experience

I hope the present battery summary functionality is just the beginning. There’s ample data available that could offer useful insights into my usage or identify problem areas. Android already does a solid job notifying me about background apps affecting battery life, but I’d like to understand how other ongoing features impact consumption.

It would be beneficial if battery summaries evolved into a holistic overview of my device’s health, complete with a widget for my home screen. While it’s informative to know if I’m using more battery than usual, a detailed breakdown of reasons relative to my average app usage would be more actionable. Did I scroll excessively? Or did my extended driving time with Google Maps drain my battery? One issue is something I can manage, while the other is just part of the experience.

Additionally, I’d love the ability to track cellular signal strength throughout the day. If I find myself in a low-signal area and the modem is strained, that’s something I could learn from. Previous Pixel models struggled with modem efficiency, although recent versions have improved; understanding its role in battery usage would still be useful.

Another enhancement would be predictive analytics. If the system recognizes that I’m a frequent social media user, and that significantly affects battery life, it should inform me. I’d appreciate a warning that I have, say, 30 more minutes of scrolling time available if I wish to conserve power throughout the day. If AI can provide actionable insights like this, I’m all for it.

Unlike previous years, I’m more receptive to Google’s attempts to leverage AI for the user experience. The Pixel 11 Pro XL showcases this potential, and I’ve seen glimpses of how Gemini Intelligence might yield daily benefits. While battery summaries represent a decent start, similar initiatives like Daily Hub and Daily Brief have not always met expectations.

As of now, battery summaries may not be particularly impactful, but hopefully, they mark the beginning of something greater.
