ChatGPT Introduces Virtual Wardrobe: Try On Clothes from the Comfort of Home!

OpenAI is reimagining its AI assistant, ChatGPT, to better assist users with online shopping. Recently, the company unveiled two innovative shopping features: a virtual try-on option for clothing and accessories, and a favoriting function that allows users to save items for future reference.

These updates come at a time when AI tools are increasingly being utilized in consumer shopping experiences. OpenAI had previously shifted focus from an instant checkout feature due to lackluster performance. Simultaneously, another startup, Instinct, has been testing product recommendations, though some users felt these suggestions were more invasive and commercial than genuinely helpful.

The new shopping features utilize OpenAI’s recently announced ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, which is designed to deliver improved lighting, richer textures, more reliable adherence to editing instructions, and faster image rendering.

The virtual try-on feature allows users to upload a selfie or full-body picture to see how clothing or accessories might look on them. This functionality is accessible via a new “Try On” button in ChatGPT’s shopping results, where users can also upload images of products (like web screenshots) for visualization.

The second feature, Favorites, enables users to save products to a Library within the app for later access. Notably, saved items will also accompany the try-on images, enhancing user convenience.

OpenAI also highlighted that ChatGPT can assist users in various other ways while shopping.

For example, users can describe a desired fashion style and ask ChatGPT to find pieces that match. Alternatively, they can upload images of outfits worn by celebrities and request assistance in locating similar items for purchase.

This approach places the assistant in competition with platforms like Pinterest and Google, which have historically dominated fashion inspiration and discovery, ultimately converting these insights into sales for online retailers.

It remains to be seen if ChatGPT will become the go-to option for these activities, particularly as Google introduced its virtual try-on feature last year.
