Prospective buyers must demonstrate they actively use their PlayStation to qualify for purchase.
In Japan, gamers looking to purchase a PlayStation 5 Pro will need to verify their activity on the console and may have to enter a lottery. Sony Japan announced that anyone wishing to buy a PS5 Pro must fulfill several criteria. They must use a Sony account registered in Japan, which is also necessary for the purchase. Additionally, they must be logged into their account and have played a minimum of 60 hours on either a PS5 or PS4, or a combination of both, between September 27, 2024, and September 27, 2026.
Only those who meet these conditions will be able to apply for the console starting October 7. Approved applicants will have the opportunity to purchase a unit between October 26 and November 2. Due to limited stock, Sony will employ a lottery system to manage applications exceeding available units. This measure aims to deter scalpers and prevent non-residents from acquiring units during their stays in Japan.
Meanwhile, in the United States, the PS5 Pro has been hard to find at major retailers due to ongoing stock shortages. Like many in the industry, Sony is grappling with supply chain issues that are expected to persist until early 2027. Despite the $150 price increase for the PS5 Pro, demand remains high, especially following the announcement of GTA VI, which is enhanced for the PS5 Pro, allowing it to utilize the console’s advanced capabilities for superior graphics and performance.
