For the last few weeks, customers interested in ChatGPT’s premium plan have faced delays. OpenAI suspended new memberships for its $200 Pro plan on September 10 due to an unexpected surge in demand for GPT-6 Astra, leaving the $100 Pro plan as the only option for new users. However, the wait is nearly over, although the reinstated $200 plan will feature some adjustments.
Thibault “Tibo” Sottiaux from OpenAI announced that the $200 Pro plan will reopen for new subscriptions on September 30. While the price remains unchanged, the method of calculating usage will see a change, resulting in an allowance of around half the “API spend” of the previous plan.
While this may seem like a downgrade at first glance, OpenAI insists the situation is more nuanced. The company has recently reduced API costs for GPT-6 Sol and Luna, allowing users to optimize their spending as operation becomes less expensive. Additionally, Sottiaux indicated that the five-hour usage cap from the previous $200 plan would not be reinstated, which would have permitted users to utilize their allowance more flexibly. More benefits that won’t impact the usage cap are anticipated to be revealed soon.
The reopening of subscriptions is expected to address the concerns of users who have been anxiously waiting for updates over the past weeks. However, a more expensive option may also be on the horizon. An unidentified ChatGPT Pro Max tier has been detected, priced at $500 per month before taxes, with another version showing $600 including VAT.
The potential features of ChatGPT Pro Max include increased speed, maximum memory storage, 100GB file space, access to advanced models, and early access to new functionalities. There’s speculation that the speed enhancement may utilize Cerebras’ infrastructure, though this is yet to be confirmed.
As of now, no official launch date or usage limits for the Pro Max plan have been announced, though its introduction seems timely with the $200 plan reboot and further subscription news expected from OpenAI DevDay on September 29.
