AI Nearly Provoked a Conflict Between the US Military and China, According to New Report

Reports suggest that the US was on the verge of attacking a Chinese vessel it mistakenly believed was transporting nuclear weapon components.

The US military was nearly spurred into action against a Chinese ship in the Middle East due to a misleading intelligence report generated partially by AI, according to recent reports. This situation “almost sparked a conflict,” as cited by sources familiar with the event, underscoring the potential dangers of integrating AI into sensitive military operations.

The Defense Department has been contacted for their take on these reports, and updates will follow if a response is received.

This incident stemmed from an analysis conducted by a specialist with special operations who queried an AI chatbot about the contents of the Chinese ship. As reported, the chatbot merged “open-source intelligence with classified signals intelligence,” leading to the erroneous conclusion that the vessel was carrying “nuclear weapons program components,” which almost resulted in military intervention until it was revealed that the information was AI-generated.

The exact cargo of the ship and the specific AI tool utilized remain unclear. As the Department of Defense is actively pursuing AI technology, there are multiple avenues available for such tools.

In January, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a directive for the Pentagon to adopt an “AI-first” strategy and engage with top AI companies. However, this objective faced obstacles with companies like Anthropic, which denied access to its models for military use concerning autonomous weaponry, leading to a temporary ban by the government. Nevertheless, other collaborations have emerged, such as a reported partnership between SpaceXAI and the military and alliances formed by NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Amazon to provide AI advancements for the Department of Defense. These government contracts are attractive for companies but come with inherent risks that differ from conventional corporate software implementations.
