Listen Labs, an AI Research Startup, Halts $1.5B Funding Round Amid Salesforce Negotiations

Listen Labs, a startup focused on market research through voice AI technology, recently entered into a term sheet agreement for a $125 million Series C funding round, valuing the company at $1.5 billion, with Menlo Ventures expected to lead the investment. However, sources indicate that the round never finalized, marking a rare departure in the venture capital landscape.

The purported financing fell through reportedly due to ongoing acquisition negotiations with Salesforce, which has shown interest in acquiring Listen Labs for approximately $2 billion. These discussions are still in progress and may not yield a conclusive agreement.

Listen Labs is making a name for itself as a leading entity in the burgeoning sector of AI-driven customer research. Established three years ago, the company boasts around $30 million in annual revenue, significantly surpassing its competitor Simile, which specializes in predicting human behavior. In late July, Simile announced a $200 million Series B funding round at a valuation of $2 billion, potentially setting a new market benchmark for Listen Labs.

Should the negotiations with Salesforce not proceed, multiple venture capitalists have speculated that Listen Labs might re-enter the funding market, aiming for a valuation of $2 billion or more.

While acquiring Listen Labs could enhance Salesforce’s AI capabilities by leveraging its technology to better forecast customer needs, insiders suggest that Salesforce could find the proposed 67 times revenue multiple to be excessive.

Neither Listen Labs, Salesforce, Menlo Ventures, nor Simile responded to requests for comments regarding these developments.

Listen Labs was founded in 2023 by Florian Jüngermann, noted for his achievements in competitive programming in Germany, and Alfred Wahlforss, who previously launched a staffing firm named Bemlo. The two met during their master’s studies at Harvard University.

The technology developed by Listen Labs formulates survey questions and conducts customer interviews using audio or video, subsequently compiling these discussions into comprehensive reports and presentations, akin to traditional market research outputs.

Large corporations frequently employ these insights to assess customer preferences and satisfaction with their offerings, but conventional market research can be costly and time-consuming.

Listen Labs’ innovations significantly cut down the expenses and duration of such projects, allowing enterprises to rapidly grasp customer feedback and make necessary adjustments more fluidly.

Among its clientele are major firms like Microsoft, Canva, Anthropic, and Sweetgreen. Listen Labs and Simile are part of a larger trend of startups revolutionizing the customer research industry through AI.

In addition to Simile, competitors in this space include Outset, Keplar, and Aaru. While some companies focus on automating interviews with real participants, others, like Aaru and Simile, utilize synthetic methods to predict responses without conducting actual interviews.

Previously, Listen Labs achieved a valuation of $500 million following a $69 million Series B funding round in late January, led by Ribbit Capital, with contributions from established investors including Sequoia, Conviction, and Pear VC.
