NASA will stream this significant event live on August 30.
The much-anticipated launch of the Nancy Grace Roman telescope is just days away, scheduled for August 30, with liftoff set to occur no earlier than 7:26 AM Eastern Time. NASA plans to commence live coverage at 6:20 AM. Engineers successfully completed the final inspection of the telescope’s primary mirror in late May to ensure its integrity following testing. In early June, NASA revealed that the launch date had been moved up from an earlier September timeframe.
The telescope is named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first Chief of Astronomy, who earned recognition as the “Mother of Hubble” for her pivotal role in the observatory’s development. Unlike Hubble, this telescope boasts a field of view at least 100 times larger, allowing it to scan the universe more broadly in a single observation. Designed to employ various methods for studying dark energy, it aims to tackle fundamental questions regarding this enigmatic force. Additionally, the telescope will feature technology to block starlight, enhancing its capability to detect exoplanets, which will assist scientists in understanding their habitability and the prevalence of solar systems similar to ours.
The infrared telescope is currently housed within a SpaceX Falcon Heavy fairing at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It will launch atop a Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A. Should the launch be postponed on August 30, NASA and SpaceX will aim for a backup opportunity on August 31 at 7:22 AM Eastern Time. Interested viewers can watch the live launch through NASA’s official site or on SpaceX’s social media platform. Moreover, NASA will host a mission science briefing on August 29 at 9 AM ET, featuring the Roman telescope team, followed by a prelaunch news conference.
