Pixel 11 Specs May Fall Short, Yet Google Gets One Key Aspect Spot On

Joe Maring

Pixel users have raised concerns regarding the Google Pixel 11 series and its lack of updates. While there may be issues with the camera performance or battery life, there is one aspect where continuity is appreciated: Google’s sustained attention on its magnetic Pixelsnap accessories.

Launched with the Pixel 10 series last year, Pixelsnap set Google apart as the second major smartphone manufacturer after Apple to fully utilize Qi2 wireless charging technology. As someone who enjoys the MagSafe ecosystem with my iPhone, it was refreshing to see this feature on an Android device. Initially, I worried that Google might abandon this innovation in future models, but I was pleased to discover that my concerns were misplaced.

Are you pleased Google retained Pixelsnap with the Pixel 11 series?

The Return of Pixelsnap

While they might not have received significant attention during the Made by Google event, the lineup of Pixelsnap accessories continues to exist and, more importantly, has received updates. Google has launched new cases compatible with its four latest phone models, available from various well-known case manufacturers like dbrand, Spigen, Mous, Case-Mate, and Bellroy, offered in diverse colors. Additionally, the Ring Stand, introduced last year, is now available in colors that coordinate with the new phone hues.

However, it is peculiar that Google’s Pixelsnap Charger Stand, which simply holds the regular Pixelsnap puck, no longer matches the phone colors. While I appreciate the new Fog color, I find the two-tone effect when paired with the white stand less appealing.

Google’s Commitment to Qi2

Pixelsnap operates on the Qi2 magnetic wireless charging standard, which has been around since April 2023. Even though this technology has been available for more than three years, Google remains among the few major smartphone brands, alongside Apple, to effectively embrace magnetic accessories.

While HMD’s 2024 Skyline model was the first Android device to fully adopt Qi2 compatibility, it remains a minor player in most markets. Brands like Samsung show interest but have not made substantial advancements. For instance, in their recently launched Galaxy Z Fold 8 and earlier Galaxy S26 series, Samsung offers magnetic accessories, but their prominence is limited compared to how Google promotes Pixelsnap.

The Future of Pixelsnap

Even as a fan of Pixelsnap and similar technologies, I recognize that some users are indifferent or against their inclusion on smartphones. Valid concerns exist, such as alignment magnets interfering with reverse wireless charging and potential increased costs. Furthermore, a niche group of enthusiasts may critique its resemblance to Apple’s offerings.

However, innovating by adopting successful ideas isn’t problematic (as long as it’s not a violation of patents). Google seems aware of this. I hope that when we see the Pixel 12 series next year, Pixelsnap will still be available, possibly enhanced with new accessories. That said, given the recent removal of the thermal sensor from this year’s Pixel Pro models, it’s not beyond reason for Google to abandon Pixelsnap for the sake of new innovations aimed at generating buzz.

We can only hope that such a turnover does not occur.
