Apple Poised to Launch Photo Verification Feature in iOS 27

A new method for verifying image authenticity may emerge in response to generative AI developments.
With the anticipated release of iOS 27, excitement is building around the new capabilities of Siri, particularly in artificial intelligence. Additionally, Apple seems to be developing new tools such as a photo authentication feature. Under examination of the latest beta version of the operating system, it has been suggested that the feature, dubbed Apple Reference Image, may confirm whether a photo was captured using an iPhone camera. This confirmation might require specific sensor data and metadata to be submitted to a secure cloud system for validation. To utilize this feature, users would need to activate a new Reference mode in their iPhone’s camera.
In an era where discerning the source of images is increasingly important, especially amidst the proliferation of AI-generated content, reliable tools are becoming essential. Current methods primarily involve embedding digital watermarks within AI-generated works, as seen in Apple’s Image Playground and its future editing tools. Similarly, Google is enhancing its SynthID watermarking initiative. The Reference Image could serve as a significant complement to existing metadata watermarking techniques. However, as this feature is still in beta testing, there’s a possibility it may not be part of the public iOS 27 rollout expected this fall.
