YouTuber Hank Green Admits His Relationship with AI is ‘Unhealthy’

Hank Green, a popular YouTuber, author, and comedian with a following of 3.2 million, has recently expressed regret to his fans for increasingly depending on AI chatbots.

The issue arose during a video on his educational channel, Complexly, where Green used the phrase “I appreciate the pushback,” prompting viewers to suspect that part of the script might have been generated by a chatbot, inadvertently including its response.

In a now-deleted message on X, Green admitted that he created the video “under a lot of pressure” and had utilized ChatGPT for research related to the script. However, he clarified that the “pushback” comment was directed towards the guest on the episode.

In a more comprehensive apology posted on Reddit, he expressed that he felt “mortified” for disappointing his audience and indicated a desire to scale back his video output moving forward.

Green stated that he relied on ChatGPT primarily to “find papers and resources for learning” about certain topics, asserting that the insights and words presented remained his own. However, he acknowledged that it was justifiable for people to criticize him for “diluting” his authenticity.

He further noted that he does not fundamentally oppose AI, yet he expressed concerns regarding its influence on climate change and the rapid consolidation of economic power by AI companies.

“What worries me most is potentially tarnishing my reputation, but I haven’t been managing my impulses properly,” he remarked. “I want you to know that my words are my own. Although I believe this has always been the case, I’ve been moving so quickly that my creative process hasn’t been clear to me, and I want to ensure it is moving forward.”

It seems that Green is planning to take some time to make this commitment a reality. During this period, he intends to either reduce or pause his postings on various YouTube channels. He expressed a desire to focus on more meaningful content, similar to a recent reflective video that resonated deeply with him. Green also mentioned he might create more spontaneous, unscripted videos.

“Primarily, I need to confront the fact that the amount of dopamine I’ve been receiving from engaging with language models and continually producing content isn’t healthy for me or beneficial for the world,” he noted. “It has been careless and has distanced me from understanding where my audience stands on these issues.”
