Meet the $9 Gadget That Can Lock Away Your Most Addictive Apps

Screen-time management apps can fall short for many users as they largely rely on personal discipline. While they might remind you to stop browsing or allow you to set usage timers, these alerts are often easy to dismiss.

The Autonomous Key tackles this challenge by offering a physical solution. This NFC-enabled key connects with an app to lock away distracting applications, requiring users to scan the key with their smartphones to regain access. Each access session lasts for a maximum of 60 minutes before the apps are automatically secured again.

The requirement of a physical action adds a unique twist to the concept. Instead of solely relying on self-discipline, users can keep the NFC key out of reach, such as in another room or at work, transforming a casual urge to check social media into a more intentional decision that requires effort.

Priced at just $9, the Autonomous Key is significantly more affordable than similar products like Blok, Unpluq, and Brick, which range from $26.50 to $59.

Though Brick offers extra functions like Sleep Mode and the ability to block in-app purchases, the Autonomous Key provides essential features at a lower cost.

The device is compact, measuring around 3 inches in length, and is compatible with smartphones running Android 8.0 or newer, as well as iPhones operating on iOS 15 or later.

The app also features AI-driven analytics, keeping track of how often users unlock distracting apps, the duration they remain open, and peak times of access.

Interestingly, the AI is noted for its playful tone. For instance, if you frequently unlock apps shortly after securing them, it might quip that the key wasn’t far enough away and recommend placing it somewhere less convenient.

Moreover, unlike many app blockers that necessitate subscriptions for additional features, the Autonomous Key comes with no hidden fees. One key can synchronize with numerous devices, making it an excellent option for users with multiple smartphones or families.

During personal trials, however, it was noted that the NFC scan sometimes required multiple attempts to register, which might not make it ideal for locking essential applications like messaging or email that are frequently accessed throughout the day.

Another consideration is what to do in the event of losing the key. If apps are locked, the current remedy is to uninstall and reinstall the app. If the apps are unlocked, removing the key from the device’s account is simple. The company has mentioned plans to introduce a backup unlocking method in an upcoming update.

Currently in its beta phase after a successful crowdfunding campaign, the Autonomous Key began shipping recently. It is available in five color options: pink, orange, blue, gray, and brown.
