Signal Explores New Feature: Linking Android Phones and Tablets as Secondary Devices

The new beta version of the app allows users to link an additional Android device to their account.

Signal’s newest beta version introduces a highly anticipated feature: the option to link an Android phone or tablet to your existing account as a secondary device. Currently, users need to register a separate number to use Signal on two phones. However, this upcoming feature will enable access to a single account with synchronized chat history across multiple devices. This information was first shared by the site AboutSignal, which noted that Signal is actively testing this capability.

Despite being in beta, Signal has already updated its support resources to provide guidance on linking additional Android devices to your main account. Previously, linking was limited to primary phones, iPads, and computers. To connect a new Android phone or tablet, users should install the Signal app from Google Play. On a phone, begin the setup process, and when prompted for your phone number, choose the kebab menu in the upper-right corner and select “Link device.” On a tablet, a “Link your account” button will be visible during setup.

Upon launching the app on your Android device, it will display a QR code labeled “Scan this code to link your account,” which needs to be scanned from your primary device. To do this, go to Signal Settings > Linked devices > Link a new device. You will have the option to sync your chat history with the new device. Remember, if you opt not to sync initially and later wish to change this, you will need to reinstall the Signal app on the secondary device.

Additionally, AboutSignal has revealed that Signal has designed an interface featuring a split-screen view for tablets. This layout displays a chat list on the left alongside the active conversation in a larger panel. The split-screen mode is optimized for landscape orientation. Users will also have the flexibility to customize their view by, for instance, hiding the chat list. However, Signal has not yet announced when these features will be rolled out to all users.
