Spotify Expands Free Access to Child-Safe Managed Accounts

Younger users can enjoy tailored profiles with customized recommendations and playlists.
Spotify is expanding its offering of managed accounts at no cost in additional regions. Effective immediately, parents and guardians in the US, UK, Australia, France, Germany, and the Netherlands can create a managed account for children under the age of 13. The service is already accessible in certain areas and will soon be introduced in countries such as Canada, New Zealand, and various nations across Europe and Latin America.
Managed accounts were first introduced alongside the Premium Family plan in October of the previous year. This feature provides younger users with a way to experience Spotify under parental guidance. These accounts feature tailored recommendations and the ability to create custom playlists, while also focusing exclusively on audio content—videos and looping visuals are disabled by default on these accounts.
Additionally, several privacy and safety features are in place. There are no messaging functions available, and profiles are kept private and unsearchable. Managed accounts do not allow users to upload a profile picture, although they can select an avatar. Content deemed explicit is automatically filtered, and parents can control which songs and artists are accessible to their children.
With the introduction of separate profiles for young children, users can expect their personal music recommendations to align better with their listening preferences. This will also enhance the accuracy of their Spotify Wrapped experience, unless their kids persistently request their favorite songs during car rides.
To set up a managed account, navigate to the menu from the home screen within the Spotify app and select Add account > Add a child under 13/create a managed account. A screen will appear detailing what a managed account entails. Click Continue, and you will then have the option to enable videos or explicit content prior to finalizing the creation of the managed account.
