The annual speedrunning marathon kicks off on July 5.
Once again, speedrunners are gathering in Minneapolis to showcase their skills while supporting a great cause, as the latest Summer Games Done Quick (SGDQ) is set to begin. This week-long event runs continuously around the clock, starting on Sunday. Viewers can catch all the action live on Twitch, and those who miss a specific run can find highlights on YouTube afterward.
The festivities will kick off at 12:30 PM ET with a preshow, followed by the main event at 1 PM, featuring a 102% run of the classic game Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong-Quest. Among the new titles making their GDQ debuts are Don’t Stop, Girlypop!, Super Meat Boy 3D, Pragmata, Resident Evil: Requiem, Unbeatable, Mouse: PI for Hire, and Saros.
I’m particularly excited about a pinball showcase featuring Total Nuclear Annihilation and the Gordon & Daxter run, where players take control of Gordon Freeman in a modded version of Jak & Daxter, complete with Half-Life weapons and movements. I also look forward to the usual Super Mario Maker 2 race included in the lineup.
As in previous years, SGDQ aims to raise funds for Doctors Without Borders. Last year’s event successfully garnered over $2.4 million for the organization.
