Venus Williams-Endorsed WeWard Introduces App Lock Feature Until You Reach Your Step Goal

WeWard, a popular app that incentivizes users for walking, is introducing a new feature called “Walking Mode.” This function allows users to limit access to specific applications until they achieve a predetermined step count, encouraging more physical activity while reducing screen time.
For those wanting to curb their scrolling on platforms like TikTok or Instagram, they can set a step goal—such as 3,000 steps—prior to gaining access to these apps. Users have the flexibility to customize both the step targets and the locked applications.
Previously, WeWard motivated users to walk by providing “Wards,” a virtual currency which can be exchanged for cash, gift cards, or charitable donations. The app also features a friendly competition aspect through leaderboards, allowing friends to engage in healthy rivalry. The new functionality to minimize screen time aligns well with the desires of many users who seek to limit their social media engagement.
Supported by tennis star Venus Williams, WeWard has attracted 30 million users across 29 countries, including 4 million in the United States. The app reports nearly a 25% increase in walking time among its users.
Yves Benchimol, co-founder of WeWard, stated, “We envision products that foster healthier habits in the real world rather than just compete for user attention. Walking Mode is our way of contributing to this vision, and we aim to spark a larger discussion on mindful design and the industry’s standards of success.”
Users typically engage with the app for only a few minutes each day, which is viewed as a positive aspect, reflecting the app’s intention not to monopolize user attention.
Unlike some reward apps that monetize by selling user data, WeWard focuses on generating revenue through in-app purchases, affiliate marketing, premium subscriptions, and advertisements.
