Home automation enthusiasts can soon interact with their smart devices through an artificial intelligence system connected to Google Home. Recently, Google introduced early access to its Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, enabling any compatible AI agent—such as Claude, Hermes, OpenClaw, ChatGPT, and Google Antigravity—to integrate securely with smart home devices and retrieve event logs.
This enhancement will empower users to employ natural language commands for tasks such as reviewing camera footage, tracking smart home activities, managing connected devices, and creating personalized smart home dashboards.
To establish this integration, users must first set up a Google Cloud project and adjust it to utilize Home MCP. Subsequently, they will need to provide the MCP configuration to their preferred agent and follow the setup instructions. The agent will prompt them to log in and approve necessary permissions. A detailed setup guide will also be available within the Google Home Developer Center.
The system will support all devices within the Google Home ecosystem, including Google Nest cameras and thermostats, as well as “Works with Google Home” (or Matter) devices such as smart bulbs.
Google has already implemented MCP across various sectors, including its cloud, data platforms, developer tools, and Google Workspace. The focus on Google Home aims to cater to consumers exploring AI agents for managing daily tasks.
The rollout of MCP access begins today and will continue in the following weeks for users subscribed to Google Home Premium Advanced in the U.S. This subscription tier, costing $20 per month, offers features like extended video history, informative notifications, alerts, video history search tools, daily summaries, and more.
Google has not provided information on whether or when MCP will become available to other subscription levels or international markets.
During this phase, the company is inviting feedback from early users through its Smart Home for Developers Community.
