Climate experts are now focused on reducing the duration of temperature increases beyond the Paris Agreement threshold.
The United Nations Environment Program has published a concerning report regarding the planet’s increasing temperatures. According to their climate scientists, global temperatures are projected to exceed the 1.5 degrees Celsius limit. Instead of focusing on how to stay below this threshold, the new report titled Limiting Overshoot outlines methods to reduce the duration that temperatures stay above this critical point.
The proposed approach, known as “overshoot, peak and decline,” emphasizes the need for nations to achieve their targets for greenhouse gas emissions and significantly remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This carbon removal is intended as an additional measure alongside existing net-zero targets. Experts warn that even a brief period of heightened temperatures can lead to disastrous consequences that will become increasingly challenging to reverse.
“Any time spent above 1.5°C will lead to negative outcomes. Extreme heatwaves are already demonstrating that climate impacts will manifest more swiftly, with greater intensity and prolonged duration, resulting in more fatalities and severe disruptions,” stated UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen. “Now is the critical moment for intensified climate action. We must commit to cutting greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing resilience and adaptability, and ensuring that exceedance of 1.5°C is kept minimal and brief.”
This marks a significant change in the organization’s communication strategy, which has been advocating for nations to stay below the 1.5-degree increase from pre-industrial temperatures—the limit established by the Paris Agreement. The altered focus also underscores the current inadequacy of efforts to curb rising temperatures, particularly as both the US and EU relaxed their emission restrictions this year.
