Uber’s European Growth Ambitions Face a Possible Setback

In February, Uber revealed its ambitious strategy to enter seven new European markets by 2026. However, according to recent reports from the Financial Times, plans for five of those markets have now been postponed. The affected countries include Austria, Norway, and Greece.

Uber has seemingly acknowledged this change, sharing with the FT that its recent expansions into Finland and Denmark have been exceptionally successful. Consequently, the company is now aiming to “maintain the momentum” in the markets it currently serves.

Another influencing factor appears to be Uber’s ongoing pursuit of Delivery Hero, a European firm that turned down Uber’s €10 billion acquisition offer in May. Reports suggest that Uber remains optimistic about finalizing this deal. An insider indicated that the decision to halt further market launches might help mitigate antitrust issues regarding the potential acquisition, particularly since Delivery Hero provides services in many of these targeted regions.
