Although HBO Max has significant titles set to release in August, including Lanterns, Mother Mary, and Conan O’Brien Must Go, U.S. subscribers can still enjoy new content this week. Are you ready for the upcoming football season? HBO and NFL Films’ acclaimed series Hard Knocks has provided an in-depth look at NFL training camps since 2001, and for the first time, it’s following a defending Super Bowl champion team.

Naked and Afraid: Shipwrecked
Twelve survivalists, one shipwreck, zero clothing
Even for veterans of tough survival shows like Survivor and Alone, the debut of Naked and Afraid: Shipwrecked is a wild ride. This latest spinoff from a series that has run for 13 years and 19 seasons has truly elevated the stakes.
In this installation, twelve all-star contestants expect a typical 35-day group challenge, only to be unexpectedly dropped into the ocean off the Philippines in the dead of night, instructed to remove their clothing and dive into the water with nothing but a flotation device and whatever they can salvage from the boat.
The contestants are divided into four teams of three, aiming to reach a remote island known for its shipwreck history and dangerous wildlife. Each team holds a part of a treasure map, and they must locate each other to complete their mission by day 35. New episodes roll out Mondays on HBO Max after their initial Sunday airing on Discovery.

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe
The Big Bang Theory’s comic shop guy breaks reality
Though I haven’t watched many episodes of The Big Bang Theory, the introduction of a time-bending, post-apocalyptic twist piqued my interest in HBO Max’s new series, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.
Set seven years after The Big Bang Theory wrapped, this spin-off highlights Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman), who unintentionally breaks a multiverse device created by Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki), causing reality to unravel. Unfortunately, Stuart is less than competent, so his chances of fixing the problem seem slim. Yet, his journey promises entertainment as he attempts to rectify the situation.
Stuart partners with his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), geologist buddy Bert (Brian Posehn), and physicist Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie), hopping across bizarre universes and encountering hilarious alternate versions of familiar characters. This series began airing on July 23, with new episodes streaming every Thursday through late September.
Where reality and alternate reality collide
HBO Max is a treasure trove of fascinating scripted series, but it also offers an impressive selection of reality TV content, courtesy of its connections to Discovery and other Warner Bros. networks. If you’re not drawn to these new shows, there are many more options available in your streaming library.
