The Journey of TikTok: Transforming into a Super App

Though TikTok is often referred to as a social media powerhouse, its ambitions are expanding beyond this realm. The platform has introduced new features like TikTok Shop, local discovery maps, enhanced search functions, and gaming options. Recently, it has also begun offering hotel booking services and is seeking financial technology licensing.

TikTok seems to be transitioning into a “super app,” allowing users to manage various digital needs in a single location, extending far beyond merely watching and sharing videos.

The super app concept has gained immense popularity in China, exemplified by platforms like WeChat, which combines functions of social media, payment processing, and app stores into one app. There’s ongoing debate about the viability of this model outside China, yet TikTok appears determined to test this expansion.

Instead of requiring users to toggle between multiple applications, TikTok aims to be the go-to app for a majority of digital interactions. Following its launch of TikTok Shop, the company—now predominantly U.S.-owned since January—continues to implement a similar strategy with its recent offerings.

In recent times, TikTok has been positioning itself as a hub for sports videos and highlights. This June, it introduced a dedicated section for the FIFA World Cup, enabling users to access scores, schedules, standings, trending videos, highlights, and player clips all in one place.

Now, users who are interested in keeping track of sports scores can do so without leaving the app or turning to external sports news providers.

The World Cup hub arises from TikTok’s sports initiative called “TikTok GamePlan,” meant to enhance discovery and user interaction for sports teams, leagues, and broadcasters. The platform has also formed partnerships with Major League Soccer (MLS) and Major League Baseball (MLB) to provide exclusive behind-the-scenes content.

Hotel and Attraction Booking

Recently, TikTok launched TikTok GO, allowing U.S. users to discover and reserve hotels and attractions directly through the app. This feature presents lodging options and activities via videos, search, and location-based content. Interested users can view details, check availability, and finalize bookings right within the app.

By streamlining travel content into a single app, TikTok reduces the need for users to navigate to third-party booking sites, integrating viral travel content with the potential for revenue generation.

As users increasingly utilize TikTok for searches, this initiative positions the platform directly in competition with Google’s core services like Search and Maps, aiming not only to be a discovery tool but also a facilitator for travel bookings.

Payments

In March, it was reported that TikTok has sought permission from Brazil’s central bank to function as a financial technology provider, enabling lending and payment services.

The company aims to obtain two key licenses: one for offering prepaid accounts for users to save funds, receive money, and send payments, and the other to lend money directly or connect borrowers with lenders.

This move effectively broadens TikTok’s functions beyond social media, venturing into a digital ecosystem. By incorporating financial services, TikTok is looking to boost user engagement, generate new revenue streams, and compete with established fintech companies and e-commerce platforms.

TikTok Shop

TikTok’s significant foray into e-commerce came with the introduction of TikTok Shop. Initially tested in 2021, it officially launched in the U.S. in 2023, successfully competing against established marketplaces like Amazon and Shein.

As reported by eMarketer, TikTok Shop’s U.S. sales surged by 407% in 2024 and an additional 108% in 2025, reaching $15.82 billion. The platform accounted for 18.2% of overall social commerce in the U.S. last year, with projections to rise to 24.1% by 2027.

Additionally, TikTok has added gift cards to its offerings, moving into the luxury retail sector after previously focusing on affordable products.

Music

TikTok has dramatically shaped how music is discovered and consumed. To leverage this influence, it launched TikTok Music in 2023 as a streaming service aimed at competing with giants like Spotify and Apple Music but subsequently shuttered it within a year.

The platform will focus on enhancing music listening experiences through collaborations with existing music streaming services, rather than directly competing. Recently, TikTok introduced a feature that allows Apple Music subscribers to play full tracks discovered on their For You feed within the app.

Search and Maps

TikTok has enhanced its search functionalities, incorporating maps, local hashtags, and reviews to assist users in discovering popular restaurants and attractions. With dedicated pages, users can now quickly access information about operating hours, ratings, and price ranges.

Initially, TikTok caused a shift in how users sought food and travel recommendations, often bypassing Google for videos that showcased locations. However, as TikTok continues to integrate detailed data, the reliance on external sources for location verification is decreasing.

Though primarily known for user-generated content, TikTok is venturing into manufactured entertainment with the introduction of an in-app Minis section and a standalone app for short-form scripted series. As it competes for viewer attention with major streaming services like Netflix, this strategic shift intensifies its rivalry in the entertainment space.

Previously, TikTok’s expansion into entertainment included features like live streaming and extended video lengths, marking a significant shift from its initial focus on short clips.

Games

TikTok has introduced casual games within its app to encourage user interaction and engagement in direct messaging. This move marks the platform’s ongoing transition from a simple social media service to a comprehensive entertainment ecosystem where users can also engage in gameplay alongside watching videos.
