Testing the Razr Fold vs. Pixel 10 Pro Fold: One Truly Captivates Me

Stephen Radochia

Motorola wasn’t the first to launch a book-style foldable phone, which made me think that the brand would need to offer exceptional hardware. I suspected that discounting the price steeply might be their way to attract customers.

However, Motorola chose to focus on quality instead, and the Razr Fold has emerged as one of the top book-style foldables available. While the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold also comes with notable improvements, selecting between the two models can be challenging.

What I Appreciate about the Motorola Razr Fold

I was unsure of what the Motorola Razr Fold would be like since I had previously enjoyed Motorola’s other foldable models. Asking consumers to invest nearly $2,000 in a book-style foldable seemed hefty, yet I was pleasantly surprised by its performance. Motorola successfully crafted a high-quality foldable, which I often recommend. The design is attractive and the textured back offers usability without needing a case, which I find particularly important due to my disdain for most folding phone cases.

Though its weight is noticeable, especially compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and its heft of 243g, the Razr Fold feels great in hand. Uniquely, the triple 50MP camera setup makes this model stand out, catering to users seeking flagship-level camera performance in a foldable device.

The camera produces vibrant images with rich contrast, ideal for sharing on social platforms. Additionally, the 3x telephoto lens has proven quite useful.

The Razr Fold excels in battery life with its substantial 6,000mAh silicon-carbon cell, enabling seamless usage into the second day on a single charge. This is a significant advantage for a book-style foldable, as it allows you to utilize the expansive inner display without worrying about battery drain. Along with 80W wired charging and 50W wireless charging, it surpasses what Google provides with its Pixel 10 Pro Fold.

On the software side, Motorola has improved, pledging seven years of updates and support, which is a promising commitment. However, the company’s past update reliability raises concerns about this promise in practice. Current Android 16 performance is commendable, and multitasking capabilities are user-friendly, allowing for easy window or split-screen views.

The chipset, Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 with 16GB RAM, ensures speedy performance without any noticeable shortcomings compared to its rivals.

The Razr Fold’s support for a stylus enhances its appeal. An 8.1-inch internal display is ideal for creatives or stylus users, making this device the best option in the US.

In summary, Motorola has executed an impressive first effort, consistently drawing me back to it amid the test of other devices.

What I Appreciate about the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold

Despite my fondness for the Razr Fold, the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold stands as a strong contender for various reasons. The inner display favors a landscape format, providing ample room for multitasking. While the Razr Fold is not light, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is noticeably heavier at 258g, giving it a denser feel.

On the positive side, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold boasts an IP68 rating for durability, which, while subjective, can be beneficial for outdoor use.

A standout aspect of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is its software experience. Currently running Android 17, this update comes with a climate of reliability in terms of future support, especially when contrasted with Motorola. Google typically delivers timely updates, making the software experience smoother, though issues have been observed in certain updates.

However, the multitasking functionality of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold didn’t meet my expectations. While app bubbles are handy, they are restricted to the Bubble Bar on the bottom left or right of the unfolded screen, a limitation that could use some revisiting.

The Tensor G5 chip performs admirably alongside 16GB of RAM, ensuring fluid operation, and there’s not much difference in performance between the two devices.

While the Pixel 10 Pro Fold doesn’t leverage advanced battery technology, its 5,000mAh cell provides commendable longevity, although its 30W wired charging speed feels lagging. The battery life allows for a full day’s usage on the inner display with enough left for the next day.

Despite stiff competition, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold still showcases commendable camera capabilities. While I lean towards the Razr Fold for straightforward photography, Google’s Night Sight feature performs exceptionally well in challenging lighting conditions.

It’s worth mentioning that the upcoming Pixel 11 Pro Fold is likely to be announced soon, which could lead to price reductions on the current model. Discounts as low as $1,500 can already be found, making it an attractive option compared to the Razr Fold.

Ultimately, I prefer the Motorola Razr Fold for its thoughtful design and capability, fulfilling most criteria I seek in a foldable device.

While the choice between two formidable devices isn’t simple, Motorola offers a slight advantage.
