Tesla Debuts Spacious Model Y L in the U.S. at a Premium Cost

Shortly after speculation began, Tesla has officially unveiled the Model Y L in the United States. However, the pricing for the initial three-row, six-seat electric SUV has come in higher than some analysts anticipated.

The vehicle is available for order under the Model Y L Premium Launch Series, starting at $61,990. This price includes dual motors, an estimated range of 325 miles, and a claimed acceleration from 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. This limited edition features one year of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), Premium Connectivity, and Supercharging subscriptions.

Additionally, the model boasts eye-catching details like exclusive puddle lights, special badging, and a suede-trimmed dashboard.

Similar to its international counterpart, the U.S. version of the Model Y L sees an increase in length by 7.3 inches and in height by 1.8 inches. The second-row’s three-person bench is replaced by two captain’s chairs, enhancing the usability of the rear seats and making it suitable for six adults.

The vehicle does not carry extra charges for various color options or the upgrade to larger 20-inch wheels, as the 19-inch wheels come standard. A tow hitch is also included at no additional cost.

Reports indicate that deliveries will begin in late summer, with new orders of the Model Y L expected to arrive by September or October. This timeline aligns with Tesla’s updates to Gigafactory Texas this spring, though it may disappoint those hoping to make summer travel plans with a new vehicle.

Is the Tesla Model Y L a Worthwhile Investment?

Hyundai and Kia Present Strong Alternatives

The starting price of $61,990 for the Model Y L Premium Launch Series positions it above the $57,490 Model Y Performance and significantly higher than the anticipated $54,000 price point. While Tesla is likely to introduce more economical versions in the future, no timeline is available for their release.

At this time, the Model Y L comes at a premium compared to its direct competitors, the Hyundai Ioniq 9 priced at $58,955 and the Kia EV9 starting at $54,900. However, Tesla’s offering does outshine in terms of range and acceleration.

High Initial Cost Could Be Acceptable

Tesla may not be overly concerned with the price tag. The Model Y L fills a void left by the discontinuation of the Model X. Furthermore, Tesla maintains a dominant position in the U.S. EV market and recorded an impressive second quarter with 480,126 deliveries. The appeal of the Model Y L may stem simply from the reputation of being a three-row SUV from the nation’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer.
