Key Points

  • Sonos has initiated a phased rollout of an update for its companion app, which includes new navigation tabs and enhanced sorting features for speakers.
  • iOS users will benefit from a Dynamic Volume Slider introduced in this update.
  • The rollout may take up to two weeks to reach all users of the Sonos app.

Earlier this year, Sonos confirmed it was working on an essential update for its app to rectify a problematic redesign from two years ago that caused significant issues, leading to delays in new hardware releases. Now, the long-awaited update has arrived.

The update was officially announced on Reddit and includes several enhancements such as new tab navigation, the ability to sort speakers and rooms, as well as the Dynamic Volume Slider exclusively for iOS users.

With the new bottom navigation bar, users will see distinct buttons for “Home,” “System,” and “Search,” with improved visibility on the selected button. To enable the enhanced navigation feature, users must toggle the “Enable Improved Navigation” option in the app settings.

The update also allows users to sort their Sonos speakers by various criteria, including alphabetical order, frequency of use, or current audio activity. Furthermore, users can pin their favorite speakers at the top for quicker access.

For iPhone users, the app introduces an improved dynamic volume slider that can showcase the current volume level or provide a shortcut to equalizer settings (if activated). This redesign aims to enhance responsiveness when adjusting volume settings.

Additionally, the update enhances the Now Playing screen by incorporating background colors influenced by the album art, as well as adding a swipe-to-delete function for Sonos Favorites.

This update is being introduced gradually, so users may not receive it immediately. Those with automatic updates enabled on their devices will not need to take any action. However, iPhone users can manually check for the update in the App Store.
