OpenAI Allegedly Finalizes $7 Billion Employee Buyout Deal

OpenAI has repurchased $7 billion in shares from its employees as part of an initiative to provide financial liquidity to its staff.

According to reports, this transaction positions OpenAI’s valuation at $852 billion, the same figure reached during its latest funding round in March, which saw an additional $122 billion infused into the company’s resources.

In June, the organization submitted a confidential filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission aiming to explore a potential initial public offering (IPO) later this year. However, the recent tender offer indicates that an IPO may not happen in the near future. As many tech firms are choosing to remain private for longer periods compared to earlier startup eras, such private tenders serve as an effective mechanism for companies to allow employees to access the value of their stock without the complexities typically associated with public listings.

OpenAI did not provide a comment by the time of this report.

Recently, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, acknowledged that the past year had not been the company’s strongest, attributing much of the responsibility to himself, but expressed optimism that the upcoming year would be its best. Generally, companies aiming to go public strive to demonstrate robust financial performance to attract investors. Reports from April indicated that OpenAI had fallen short of its internal financial targets.

While OpenAI’s significant growth and innovative products are expected to capture substantial interest in the public sector, the potential entry of competitor Anthropic—which reportedly turned a profit earlier this year—reinforces the need for OpenAI to present itself favorably. This tender could also suggest a strategy shift for OpenAI, as it aims to narrow its focus and build on its enterprise business before proceeding with its much-anticipated public offering.
