Netflix May Be Developing Permanent Live TV Channels

In an effort to enhance viewer engagement amidst signs of waning interest, Netflix is reportedly considering the introduction of live TV channels that would allow for continuous streaming.
According to recent reports, Netflix is exploring the idea of live channels that would offer ongoing content streaming, providing subscribers with something to watch at any hour. Instead of solely relying on binge-worthy series or films, viewers could leave a live channel running for extended entertainment.
This strategy would position Netflix to more directly compete with free, ad-supported streaming platforms such as Pluto TV and Tubi. Additionally, it could strengthen Netflix’s advertising revenue potential, as live broadcasts typically do not permit viewers to skip commercials.
Sources also indicate that Netflix is looking into bundling options, similar to what companies like Apple and Amazon offer. Notably, Peacock is mentioned as a possible partner in these discussions.
Netflix has not provided a comment regarding these developments.
These potential plans come in the wake of other initiatives by Netflix aimed at boosting viewer interaction. Recently, the platform has been testing short-form videos, video podcasts, and a gaming app tailored for children to attract more viewership.
Just earlier this week, it was revealed that Netflix is becoming increasingly wary of declining audience numbers between the first and second seasons of its original content, leading to concerns about its ability to maintain enduring hits. Furthermore, Netflix’s share of total television viewing has diminished, with recent data indicating it represented only 7.8% of TV viewing in April.
In addition, there are reports suggesting that Netflix is in discussions to acquire Letterboxd, the well-known social network for cinema enthusiasts.
