Thread is a communication protocol that serves as the backbone for Matter, which enables smart home devices to communicate. While Matter streamlines communication between devices, Thread enables this communication to be transmitted wirelessly through a mesh network, relaying signals among devices effectively.
The upgrade to Thread 1.4 is significant as it simplifies credential sharing, making it easier for third-party applications and various ecosystem devices to securely connect to an existing Thread mesh network. Furthermore, Thread 1.4 enhances device responsiveness, minimizes dropouts, and offers other performance improvements.
At this time, Google has yet to publicly confirm this rollout. One Reddit user commented on the lack of official announcement, saying, “You think they would announce this somewhere.”
