On Sunday evening, users of Meta’s AI assistant, Muse, encountered a peculiar error message while trying to make purchases on Amazon. According to GeekWire, the message stated: “Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed.”
This essentially means that Muse is not permitted to shop on Amazon, and anyone attempting to complete a purchase through this AI will need to look elsewhere.
This situation highlights a rivalry between major tech companies. Amazon boasts its own set of foundational models along with one of the web’s leading inference platforms. Given that they are not legally obliged to grant access to Muse, it raises the question: why should they?
Moreover, there are valid concerns for Amazon about entering the realm of agent-driven commerce at this time. If Muse were to place an incorrect order, Amazon would find itself responsible for addressing the fallout—handling grievances from both consumers and vendors. While Muse has a relatively low rate of generating inaccuracies compared to other AI models, it is still not perfect. Even if Amazon recognizes potential in AI-driven shopping, they might prefer to bide their time and observe a few more development cycles before making any commitments.
