Meta Discontinues Controversial AI Tool on Instagram Following User Outcry

Meta has removed a divisive feature that enabled users to alter images from public Instagram accounts using artificial intelligence. This feature, introduced earlier this week alongside several other AI tools, has been deemed unsuccessful and is no longer accessible, as stated by the company.
This week, Meta launched Muse Image, an AI image generator created by its Meta Superintelligence Labs. One notable aspect of this tool allowed users to create images by tagging public Instagram accounts. However, the feature did not notify users if their images were utilized in this manner, leading to substantial criticism.
Responses to the feature quickly emerged, prompting discussions on how to disable it effectively.
Following the backlash, Meta publicly announced on Friday that it would retract the feature. Dylan Byers, a founding partner at Puck News, was among the first to report this change.
In a blog post, Meta stated, “Our aim was to offer a helpful creative tool and allow individuals to dictate whether their public content could be referenced. We’ve received feedback indicating that this feature did not meet expectations, so we have decided to discontinue it.”
Meta has been contacted for further clarification, and any updates will be reflected in future articles.
The integration of AI into social media has often led to its misuse, particularly in generating inappropriate content, especially of female public figures. While platforms have tried to address these issues, their protective measures frequently fall short.
In light of the circumstances surrounding Meta’s withdrawn feature, it became evident that it was likely to be exploited improperly. Byers mentioned that the decision to remove the feature was made “in response to concerns raised by users and industry talent agencies, including CAA.”
