Maximize Your Windows Laptop’s Battery Performance with These Simple Adjustments

If your Windows laptop rapidly drains its battery while unplugged, tweaking a few settings can help maximize your battery life.

It’s disheartening to see your laptop’s battery level swiftly drop when you forget to bring your charger along. Although some Windows laptops have shown advancements in battery efficiency due to Microsoft’s focus on ARM architecture, the typical clamshell still heavily depends on the more powerful x86 framework, which is also more demanding on battery life.

If you’re running high-performance settings, even the best Windows devices might struggle to last through a lunch break. Windows 11 has faced various performance challenges, and despite Microsoft’s attempts to enhance it, the system’s overhead can still be an issue. Consequently, if you want optimal battery longevity, switching to Linux could be considered. However, there are still practical measures you can take on Windows 11 to extend your battery life.

The most critical adjustment is dimming your screen’s brightness; simply press Win + A and drag the slider down. Additionally, by fine-tuning your settings, you can gain valuable extra hours before your laptop shuts down. Power management is about finding a balance: the more tasks your laptop performs, the quicker the battery depletes, so be ready to sacrifice some performance for longer usage. Adjust these changes according to your needs to find the right mix.

Choose an energy-efficient power plan

Windows laptops have several power modes, each adapted for specific conditions, like when plugged in or running on battery. If the default power plan consumes too much energy for your needs, it’s easy to make adjustments.

To modify the settings, open the Settings app with Win + I and navigate to System > Power & battery. Here you can set basic power preferences under Power Mode, which controls how long your display and system remain active when connected to power versus when running solely on battery. Below this, you can find options for Screen, sleep, & hibernation timeouts, which is crucial to lower if you often leave your device idle. The Energy Saver option, akin to low-power modes on smartphones, minimizes background activity, dims screen brightness, and disables some of the visual effects in Windows, thus prolonging battery life when needed. You can even set it to activate automatically at a specific battery level.

For those willing to explore further, access the classic Control Panel via the Start menu. In the Power Options section, select Power saver, if not already selected, and click on Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings to reveal more detailed options, including the ability to adjust the Minimum and Maximum processor states under Processor power management to conserve battery by underclocking your CPU.

You could also lower power usage by navigating to Settings > Accessibility > Visual Effects and disabling Transparency effects and Animation effects. For an even more significant impact, input “performance” into the Start menu, choose Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, and select Adjust for best performance, which will disable numerous visual enhancements. This is especially beneficial for lower-end Windows devices.

Shut down unnecessary background applications

If you’ve adjusted your settings but still struggle with battery life, your laptop may be overloaded with background programs. Even if apps aren’t visible on your main screen, they may still be running in the background.

Start by checking your taskbar: after closing visible apps represented by larger icons, examine the smaller icons at the bottom-right corner. Right-click and close any that aren’t necessary. You can also click the upward arrow to reveal more icons.

Keep in mind that active browser tabs can also consume considerable battery power. If you have several tabs open in Chrome or Edge, close those that you’re not actively using. For tabs you wish to revisit later, consider grouping them or storing them in bookmarks. Additionally, enabling features such as Memory Saver in Chrome or Sleeping Tabs in Edge can help minimize resource usage on inactive tabs.

Lastly, inspect your running background processes. Use the Ctrl + Shift + Esc shortcut to open Task Manager, click on Processes on the left side, and sort them by Name or by resource consumption (like CPU) for a clearer overview. Exercise caution when dealing with unfamiliar processes; if curious, right-click and select Search online. You can also prevent unnecessary startup tasks from running automatically or utilize software like Chris Titus Tech’s WinUtil to manage processes more effectively.
