Mark Wahlberg Aims to Disrupt the Longevity Startup Scene with Budget-Friendly Fitness Centers

Mark Wahlberg is launching a new gym in December that he claims is the most exciting venture of his career. This gym aims to carve out a niche in the growing wellness market, which often features expensive, diagnostic-focused services.

During a conversation at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, Wahlberg revealed that Municipal Gym will debut in December. Located just outside Las Vegas, this 32,000-square-foot facility will offer services like blood testing, epigenetic assessments, recovery equipment, compression therapy, and cold plunges. There will also be a café serving protein muffins. He envisions Municipal Gym as a more affordable option compared to luxury longevity clubs that charge exorbitant annual fees.

This initiative is a continuation of an idea that began developing about seven years ago with his casual sportswear line.

Municipal, the clothing brand, was launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, a move Wahlberg admits wasn’t ideal, given that many retailers were struggling. This clothing line emerged from his experiences as a fitness spokesperson, where he frequently collaborated with brands. He noted a common trend among companies: a focus on selling standard apparel like T-shirts and sneakers, which didn’t align with his desire to make a more significant impact on people’s health and wellness.

Wahlberg seeks to influence various aspects of health, including nutrition, supplements, training, and recovery. The apparel line was merely a stepping stone toward that larger goal. “We thought we’d start with clothing and expand from there,” he explained, emphasizing his passion for ventures that reflect his identity.

Despite the challenges of the clothing industry, Wahlberg remains optimistic, believing the gym will showcase his brand. He sees it as an opportunity for customers to experience the products firsthand and also views exercise as a critical component of wellness.

Many competitors in the wellness space focus on high-end offerings. For instance, Fountain Life, co-founded by Tony Robbins, raised significant funds last year to cater to wealthy clients, with annual memberships costing as much as $21,500. Similarly, other brands are planning memberships as high as $36,000.

Wahlberg asserts that Municipal Gym offers similar services at a much more accessible price point. He mentioned that for just $99, members will receive multiple rounds of blood work and a consultation with a doctor to discuss potential health predispositions. Additional services like supplements and hormone therapy will also be available.

When asked if the gyms will also serve as retail spaces for his other products, he replied “kind of,” explaining that he aims to create a comprehensive “health and wellness ecosystem” in the gym.

Wahlberg did not specify a number for future locations but described his expansion plans as “aggressive.” He shared that landlords and developers have shown keen interest in the Las Vegas site, offering favorable terms for its development.

Reflecting on past experiences, Wahlberg mentioned his involvement with the fitness chain F45, which faced significant challenges after going public. He emphasized the importance of partnering with others who share his vision and stated his preference for creating an environment where members feel encouraged to spend time and engage with one another.

The name “Municipal” holds special meaning for Wahlberg, who grew up in a large family in Boston and often played in public parks. He believes these experiences taught him valuable life lessons about competition and resilience. His troubled youth, including a brief incarceration, has shaped his commitment to giving back and inspiring others, particularly young people from similar backgrounds.

At 55, Wahlberg’s priorities have shifted from purely aesthetic goals to focusing on overall well-being. “I just want to feel good when I wake up,” he said, emphasizing a desire to tackle his daily challenges with vigor.

Wahlberg is currently juggling various roles, including his gym project, an acting role, and supporting his daughter’s equestrian pursuits. He expressed eagerness for the gym’s opening, likening his anticipation to watching paint dry. While he is not actively seeking new ventures, he remains open to opportunities that might arise.
