Influencers Face Criticism for Joining OpenAI’s Inaugural Luxury Retreat

The inaugural influencer retreat organized by OpenAI has triggered significant online criticism amid ongoing debates surrounding AI.

This past weekend, OpenAI hosted several influencers at a luxurious getaway in upstate New York, dubbed “Summer Club.” Attendees were treated to gourmet meals sourced from local farms, wellness activities such as beekeeping, and workshops aimed at helping them utilize OpenAI’s products more effectively. Participants shared experiences of creating websites and attending a painting workshop.

While the shared videos depicted a fun and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere, the public’s reaction was largely critical. One influencer who showcased her trip on TikTok and Instagram received backlash, with comments suggesting she sold out for a luxurious experience, or questioning how to reconcile the event’s extravagant nature with the environmental footprint of AI data centers.

Another influencer was asked whether she planned to create a video detailing her visit to a data center, which aligns with a popular content format. When contacted by TechCrunch, a third influencer appeared to have removed her video related to the trip, although other content not explicitly linked to OpenAI remained visible on her profile.

In response to inquiries, OpenAI representative Drew Pusateri emphasized that the event was part of a broader marketing strategy aimed at educating creators on practical applications of ChatGPT. He stressed that the retreat was designed to provide hands-on experience with the new ChatGPT Work, a tool for tasks like document drafting. Pusateri stated, “Creators play a pivotal role in our community and how information about our products is disseminated.” He expressed appreciation for constructive discussions around AI and highlighted the importance of creators engaging with the brand and its events.

OpenAI’s approach of leveraging influencers through lavish retreats is not new. In February, it was reported that the company appointed Charles Porch, known for working with celebrities, as its VP of global creative partnerships. His mission involves connecting with creative communities to enhance AI products and conducting a “listening tour” to understand their interactions with AI tools.

Other AI organizations have also engaged influencers. Notably, Anthropic organized a dinner for influencers, and Microsoft Copilot previously held a brand retreat during the Super Bowl. However, the response to the OpenAI retreat has been particularly intense. One influencer commented on LinkedIn, expressing surprise at the heated reactions, as she had anticipated interest in insights about using OpenAI technology.

TechCrunch reached out to a commenter who expressed dissatisfaction with an influencer’s video. This individual pointed out the pervasive negativity regarding AI in American society and emphasized the need for a responsible discourse around the technology’s use. “These posh influencer gatherings only fuel negative sentiments,” she stated, adding that it feels tone-deaf to flaunt a luxurious lifestyle during challenging times.

The timing of the event further compounded the backlash, as OpenAI is reportedly negotiating a multi-billion dollar deal for a data center in Ohio, coinciding with rising concerns over the ecological impacts of such facilities. Many observers noted the irony of a luxury event occurring in a serene natural setting.

Critics also highlighted OpenAI’s financial ties to the Department of Defense, further stirring discontent regarding the brand’s retreat. TechCrunch continues to seek comments from the influencers involved.
