Hugging Face CEO Advocates for ‘Radical Transparency’ Following ‘Unparalleled’ OpenAI Breach

Following a recent acknowledgment from OpenAI about a security breach involving its AI models affecting Hugging Face, CEO Clem Delangue announced on X that he was traveling to San Francisco for a discussion regarding this situation with the “rogue agent.”
In a subsequent update on Saturday, Delangue specified his requests from OpenAI, emphasizing the need for “radical transparency.” He urged OpenAI to make the data related to the “rogue” agents available for examination by the broader research community.
Additionally, he requested enhanced resources for protecting systems, asking OpenAI to allocate $100 million in computing resources to assist Hugging Face in developing robust cyber defense mechanisms using both open and proprietary models.
Delangue remarked, “The first autonomous agent cyberattack is an extraordinary occurrence. It warrants an equally extraordinary response!”
While the attack was described as autonomous, cybersecurity experts have indicated that human oversight might be a factor, particularly pointing to OpenAI’s reported failure to adequately set up a testing environment that should have been completely isolated.
When approached regarding Delangue’s remarks, an OpenAI representative verified that the meeting occurred and referenced a company announcement stating, “This is an unprecedented incident, signaling a critical moment for AI safety. We are in the midst of a comprehensive evaluation with external consultants and our Safety and Security Committee involved. After this review, we intend to share a technical report detailing our insights in the following weeks.”
