Google’s Deepfake Detection Technology Unveils the Truth Behind McConnell’s Hoax Image

Google’s SynthID technology has successfully identified a prominent AI-generated fake image, marking a notable achievement for the system.

Recently, an image emerged online featuring Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell appearing distressed in a hospital bed surrounded by tubes. This image quickly gained traction on platforms like Reddit and X, but was debunked by the renowned fact-checking website Snopes by mid-week. Upon investigation, the image was found to carry the SynthID watermark developed by Google, which is intended to identify AI-created visuals.

In essence, the watermark functioned as intended, showcasing its effectiveness in the fight against deepfake technology.

Senator McConnell’s health has been the focus of substantial speculation following his hospital admission due to an emergency call on June 14. His limited public appearances since then have fueled rumors about his declining health. However, this particular instance was proven to be completely fabricated.

Introduced at Google’s I/O developer conference in 2025, SynthID acts as an invisible watermark that is detectable by SynthID algorithms while remaining unnoticed by most viewers. This watermark is embedded within the image itself, allowing it to remain intact even when the image is captured across various platforms, as was the case with the McConnell image.

One limitation of SynthID is that it requires collaboration from the image generation tool to be effective. Since its inception in 2025, images produced by Gemini models have included this watermark. OpenAI became involved in May 2026 as part of a wider initiative to combat harmful image generation, whereas Anthropic has chosen not to partake in the program.

To verify whether an image contains the SynthID watermark, users can consult a Gemini model or utilize OpenAI’s public image verification tool.
