Google Unveils Android 17 QPR1 Beta 5 for Testing Enthusiasts

Quick Summary

  • Following the launch of Android 17 QPR1 Beta 4 two weeks ago, Beta 5 is now available for testers.
  • Support for Pixel 6 and 6 Pro has been reinstated after being omitted in the previous beta.
  • Google’s latest update primarily focuses on bug fixes.

Recently, Android 17 reached a significant milestone with its stable release, rolling out to Pixel devices worldwide. Following this, testers are diving into the next update, as the Android 17 QPR1 Betas provide insights into the upcoming changes for the September Feature Drop. After the release of QPR1 Beta 4 two weeks prior, Google is now launching QPR1 Beta 5.

According to Google’s Mishaal Rahman, version CP31.260608.007 is on its way to testers using Pixel 6 and later models. This is notable as the last beta did not support the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, although Google had assured users that these models would be included in this new update.

As expected for a Beta 5 release, Google is mainly focused on refining the software, resulting in numerous bug fixes. Here is a breakdown of the issues being addressed:

  • A problem in the Game Dashboard where users couldn’t stop recordings or save video files.
  • A situation where the camera app would freeze briefly upon being opened.
  • A freeze issue occurring when waking the device from Always-On Display.
  • A timeout complication affecting download completions when not connected to an active VPN.
  • Inconsistencies in charging completion time displayed on the lock screen compared to the charging screensaver.
  • A crash in the Private Space UI and incorrect displays of locked apps in search results.
  • A system crash and freezing when downloading games.
  • An incorrect bubble option appearing in the context menu of archived apps.
  • A regression in WebView rendering that caused crashes in certain games.
  • Widgets disappearing or becoming unavailable after rebooting the device.

A welcome enhancement included is a new “don’t ask me again” feature for activating mobile data.

If you’re interested in trying out QPR1 for the first time, you can do so by enrolling your Pixel device in Google’s Android Beta Program.

However, if you’re currently testing the Android 17 Beta and wish to switch to the stable version without losing data, Google advises against installing QPR1 Beta 5 and recommends opting out of the beta program instead.
