Google Photos offers a variety of useful features, making it a popular choice for users. As phone camera capabilities have improved significantly by 2026, the initial 15GB of free storage—less if you prefer not sharing your phone number—has started to feel inadequate. Consequently, many users may consider reclaiming some of that space. Google provides tools designed to help users manage their storage, but a recent inquiry into user opinions suggested that this process could be simplified.
A colleague, Megan Ellis, shared her personal tips for optimizing Google Photos storage after conducting an extensive clean-up of her library. With more than 47,000 items backed up, she managed to recover around 23GB by utilizing Google’s existing cleanup tools and employing some additional manual strategies. This experience revealed certain shortcomings, including a notable absence of a reliable method for identifying duplicate photos, prompting a reader poll on the need for improved tools.
The poll results aligned with expectations, though the voting distribution was surprising. Out of over 6,000 respondents, fewer than 300 thought the current tools were sufficient for effective storage management. A staggering 95% of voters felt that the process should be made easier, clearly indicating a consensus.
It’s not unusual for questions framed as “Should Google simplify…” to receive broad affirmative responses. However, achieving a 95% agreement is no small feat and emphasizes how many users have struggled to manage their media effectively within the app.
One can only hope that this feedback reaches the Google Photos team or even Sundar Pichai. In the meantime, users will have to rely on the app’s filtering options and the insightful tips shared by Megan Ellis. Additionally, a reader, Melissa Bernhauser, contributed a practical suggestion for managing storage over time:
I set up a routine that runs twice daily on my phone and tablet to remind me to clear out photos and open the photos app. This way, the device at hand prompts me. The cleanup involves searching for items dated to today minus the year. This approach minimizes the number of photos to sort through for deletion, usually taking just a couple of minutes. By next year, my photo library should be organized with minimal effort.
