Google is rolling out exciting updates for Gemini for Home (Early Access) and the Google Home app. The latest enhancement, effective August 5, includes a captivating new AI-driven Storytime feature and aims to enhance the functionality of everyday smart home controls.
A standout addition is the Interactive Storytime feature in Gemini, where users can craft and modify stories using voice commands directed at the AI assistant.
Users can prompt Gemini to create original tales, include their children as characters, or alter storylines as they unfold. For example, you can swap the Big Bad Wolf from The Three Little Pigs with a dinosaur or have the protagonist stumble upon a treasure map mid-story.
In addition to Storytime, Google is enhancing various everyday features. Gemini for Home now exhibits improved understanding of alarm and timer requests in natural language, accommodating preference for 12-hour or 24-hour formats.
The assistant has also become more adept at responding to inquiries such as the remaining time on a timer and reliably processes requests for setting cooking timers.
Enhancements to the Google Home App
The updates also bring several user-friendly improvements to Google Home speakers. Now, when turning off or dimming lights, a distinct confirmation sound plays, and a bug has been resolved that previously kept the speaker’s light ring illuminated after a routine was completed. Additionally, a brief Spotify outage from late July has been addressed.
On the other hand, the Google Home app is receiving significant enhancements, particularly regarding camera and smart home device compatibility.
A notable change includes expanded support for various third-party security cameras, such as those from Eufy, Tapo, Wyze, Reolink, and Nanit, allowing users to access multiple camera feeds within one app. Improvements have also been made to save camera recordings, enhance live streaming reliability, ease navigation of camera views, and optimize performance on both Android and iOS platforms.
Subscribers to the Home Premium Advanced service will benefit from AI-generated summaries of camera events, simplifying the process of reviewing footage without needing to watch entire recordings.
Lastly, Google has announced that Home app automations are now accessible in more countries and languages, alongside enhanced reliability for smart lock integrations, featuring improved notifications and error handling.
