The custom vibration patterns we discovered in Google’s applications last year are now available to the public. Google has introduced these features in the Pixel 11 series, enhancing user control over notification vibrations on their devices.
Our initial findings regarding Google’s intention to allow Pixel users to personalize their vibration patterns emerged from an APK teardown of the Google Sounds app. The version we analyzed indicated that users would have access to distinct vibration options for ringtones and notifications, enabling them to create a mix of sounds and haptic feedback. These features are now incorporated into the Pixel 11 series.
Understanding the Custom Vibration Features on Pixel 11
To customize the vibration for your Pixel 11 ringtone, navigate to Settings > Sound & vibration > Ringtone > Vibration. Google provides a suggested vibration pattern based on your selected ringtone, simplifying the process of finding the right fit.
Users can explore various patterns, including Classic Long Vibration, Heartbeat, and Gears, to apply to any ringtone. Additionally, the option to adjust vibrations appears while selecting ringtones from the Sound Collection menu.
Alerts are also equipped with unique vibration patterns. Users can access these by navigating to Settings > Sound & vibration > Notification > Vibration. Options available here include Classic Short Vibration, Rattlesnake, Pulse, and more.
Each pattern delivers a different sensation, varying from quick, sharp taps to longer, more intricate vibrations. Most patterns are aptly named, giving users a good idea of their tactile experience. Furthermore, Google is expanding beyond general vibration settings with another feature that we previously discovered.
Back in September of the previous year, we reported on indications within Google Contacts that pointed to the ability to set unique vibration patterns for individual contacts. This functionality is now functional on the Pixel 11 series.
To set this up, open the Contacts app, select the desired contact, and tap Contact ringtone > Vibration. You will find the same range of ringtone vibration patterns available in the main Sound & vibration settings.
This allows you to assign distinct patterns to different individuals, such as one for a family member and another for a close friend. If your phone is in your pocket, you’ll be able to gauge who is calling just based on the vibration pattern.
Currently, these features are exclusive to the Pixel 11 series. It remains uncertain if Google will roll them out to older Pixel models in future updates, although there’s no apparent reason they couldn’t be implemented.
