Google is set to make it easier for political fundraising campaigns and committees to send emails without being filtered as spam in Gmail. This move comes as the 2026 midterm elections approach.

According to reports, Google is launching a Gmail Verified Sender Program on September 8. This new initiative allows eligible candidates, political parties, PACs, and other political organizations to bypass Gmail’s spam filters, contingent upon meeting certain requirements.

To be eligible, participants must use a verified domain, satisfy Google’s security and authentication requirements, and ensure that less than 0.3% of their emails are reported as spam over a two-week average. If participants fail to adhere to these standards, Google reserves the right to suspend or remove them, subjecting their messages to standard filtering processes again.

Google stated that the purpose of the program is to connect individuals with desired emails while still allowing users to have control over their inboxes. Users have the option to mark messages as spam, block senders, and unsubscribe, so achieving verified status doesn’t grant campaigns unrestricted email privileges.

This development follows years of complaints from Republican groups, who argued that Gmail’s spam filter was biased against their fundraising emails compared to those from Democrats. Although the Republican National Committee took legal action against Google regarding this matter, the case was ultimately dismissed, as was a related complaint filed with the Federal Election Commission.

The timing of this program’s launch may not sit well with those already overwhelmed by political emails, as it will take effect less than two months before the elections slated for November 3, providing campaigns ample opportunity to increase their fundraising efforts during this critical period.
