FBI Warns: Cybercriminals Targeting Personal Accounts to Expose Private Photos
The FBI has issued a warning about cybercriminals infiltrating social media accounts of both adults and minors to obtain private and explicit photographs and videos.
According to the agency, the criminals frequently employ social engineering strategies to exploit their targets, often leading to extortion or the public dissemination of the stolen material.
“Victims frequently endure repeated victimization through harassment, sextortion, stalking, or other targeted assaults, such as having their stolen content advertised on their own social media profiles,” stated the FBI.
While these crimes are not new, the current alert from the FBI suggests that such incidents might be increasing, according to Rachel Tobac, CEO of the security education company SocialProof Security. The FBI has not yet responded to requests for further comments.
Tobac noted that these cyberattacks tend to particularly affect young males and highlighted the serious public health implications, as some victims may resort to self-harm as a result.
In its advisory, the FBI explained that attackers often employ methods such as brute-forcing accounts with stolen or reused passwords, impersonating customer service agents of popular platforms like Instagram, and contacting potential victims under the guise of account recovery needs. Some hackers also send phishing emails through fraudulent domains that resemble authentic social media login pages.
To safeguard against these threats, it is recommended to use distinct passwords stored securely in a password manager, activate multi-factor authentication, and remain cautious of unsolicited communications from individuals claiming to be associated with social media firms, as reputable tech companies typically do not initiate contact with users. The advisory also emphasizes the importance of refraining from storing sensitive and explicit images in online accounts.
