Disney+ Weighs the Introduction of a Free Streaming Option, According to Sources

Disney+ is exploring the option of providing some content from its streaming library for free, as reported by Business Insider.
During a recent town hall meeting, Adam Smith, the chief product and technology officer at Disney, spoke about the potential for introducing free-tier offerings. However, specific details regarding which titles might be made available or the timeline for such a launch remain unclear.
Introducing free content could enhance Disney+’s competitiveness against platforms like YouTube and Tubi, which are increasingly attracting audiences with no-cost viewing options.
As major streaming platforms elevate their subscription prices, viewers are increasingly opting for ad-supported alternatives. According to recent data from Nielsen, free streaming services accounted for 18.7% of television viewing time in the U.S. in April 2026, up from 16.8% in the previous year and 12.7% in the year before that.
By making some content available for free, Disney+ could set itself apart from competitors such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, especially since platforms like Apple TV+ and Paramount+ have already started allowing viewers to access certain free episodes without a subscription.
